Papyrus Gonolek in Uganda (Laniarius mufumbiri)

The Papyrus Gonolek: A Hidden Gem of Uganda’s Wetlands.

Papyrus Gonolek (Laniarius mufumbiri) is the most elusive and stunningly good-looking bird in Uganda. Its natural habitat lies in African Great Lakes’ papyrus swamps, and no other bird birders from all over the globe are jealous of. Uganda has vast wetlands and high endemism providing one of the best chances of viewing this very rare and lovely species in the wild.

Appearance and Behaviour of the Gonolek.

Papyrus Gonolek is a very beautiful bird, with the stark contrast of colors. Its crimson-red belly stands out in contrast to its jet-black head, wings, and tail. A golden-yellow nape adds to its distinctive appearance, making it one of the most photographed birds in Uganda.

Though its behavior is magnificent plumage, the Papyrus Gonolek is shy and secretive. It likes to be hidden in thick papyrus reeds, where it is hard to spot. But, before it appears, its melodious call freely reveals its whereabouts. Such calls, usually presented in duets by couples, resound across the swamps, creating an imperishable atmosphere of Uganda’s swamps.

Habitat and Distribution in Uganda.

As its common name suggests, the Papyrus Gonolek is uniquely suited to life in papyrus swamps. In Uganda, it is found at several significant wetland localities, including:

Mabamba Wetland: A superb birding spot, also famous for the Shoebill.

Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary: Offers a range of papyrus-reliant species, including the Papyrus Gonolek.

Lutembe Bay: A Ramsar site with very high bird diversity.

Queen Elizabeth National Park (Ishasha sector): Features wetland habitat where the bird is sometimes to be found.

Lake Kyoga and Lake Victoria wetlands: Provide extensive papyrus cover which is ideal for the species.

Diet and Feeding Habits of the Gonolek.

Papyrus Gonolek is an insectivorous bird that feeds primarily on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates that live among thick vegetation of papyrus. It sometimes eats small frogs and seeds. It forages by moving very quickly among reeds and snatching prey from leaves or off the ground.

In breeding, the Papyrus Gonolek breeds in monogamous pairs and builds well-hidden nests within dense papyrus thickets. The nests are carefully made from vegetation and positioned in a strategic position to avoid predators. The female lays 2-3 eggs, which are incubated by both parents and then fed the chicks after hatching. The dense cover protects them, which ensures a higher survival rate of their young.
