Day 3: Kibale Forest National Park – Chimpanzee Tracking – Bigodi Swamp Walk.

Chimpanzees share 98% of human genes making them our closest living relatives. They are found in 21 countries throughout Africa, but are most easily sighted in Uganda due to their dense populations. Today, there are approximately 5,000 chimpanzees left in the wild. The Chimpanzee Trekking experience here is done on several well maintained walking trails. There is also a wonderfully diverse concentration of other primates, more than any other forest in East Africa, in fact.

Besides our delightful cousins, the chimpanzees, 14 Days Uganda & Kenya wildlife, you can find red colobus, red-tailed guenon, white-nosed monkey, gray-cheeked Mangabey, blue monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, and the black and white colobus monkey. In addition, you may see olive baboons, bush babies and nocturnal pottos. The aim for your trekking through the jungle under the care of professional guide, is 1 hour of eye to eye contact with the chimpanzees. We can however cannot guarantee 100% for you to see them as they are still wild animals; nevertheless your chances are very good.

Your next activity will also take you to the Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary which features 8 primate species, over 200 bird species and many reptiles. During the walk – which takes 2 to 3 hours – you have a chance to many animals but the highlight is catching a glimpse of a famous bird; the Great Blue Turaco. The sanctuary is operated by KAFRED, a registered community based organization. The income from the walk is used for community development projects such as schools and hospitals.

This will be an eventful day and you need to wake up at around 6am. As you take breakfast, request the hotel to prepare for you parked lunch just in case the activity goes on past mid-day. The driver will take you to the park offices so that you are in time for the briefing which starts at 7:30am. The briefing covers everything there is to know about gorilla trekking including the gorilla groups in the sector, history of the forest and what to expect. After the briefing, you will be assigned a gorilla family along with 7 other travelers. The Park Guides will offer you a hiking stick and a chance to hire porters to help you with any heavy luggage/cameras. After everyone is assembled, you will begin tracking the primates.

Gorilla trekking can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on the gorilla family you are tracking and their location on the day of the trek. Once you get to them, you are allowed only one hour of observation. Use this time to study the group and individual members. Do not forget to take some videos and photos or else no one will know that you ever took part in such a fascinating activity. After Morning breakfast your designated safari driver guide will be waiting for you at parking point of the hotel, and you will drive straight to Lake Nakuru national park in a safari vehicle and enjoy the best Lake Nakuru National Park activities. The distance from Nakuru to Nairobi is about a 3 hours’ drive and will see you make a stopover at the Great Rift Valley Viewpoint. At the Great Rift Valley, you’ll have the chance to see this wonderful site. Upon arrival in Lake Nakuru, you’ll head straight to the game park for game drives. The game viewing safari in the game park will continue until noon, the ideal time (in time for lunch) to head to the hotel for check-in. Your guide will leave you to freshen up and relax, after which he will pick you up for an afternoon game viewing.

Lake Nakuru Tour with the afternoon game drives allow you to see many animals around and about looking for an evening meal. The herbivores will be out grazing and trying to stay alive. The chances of seeing a carnivore in the hunt are high in the afternoon, making it the best time to visit Lake Nakuru National Park. Day 10: Morning Game Drive and Transfer From Lake Nakuru To Masai Mara.

Your safari guide will pick you up in a safari vehicle bright and early morning after breakfast at the camp. You will check out of your room as you’ll drive to Masai Mara after this morning’s game viewing in a safari land cruiser. This time the tour in Kenya will start from the lake, with a morning drive. In the morning, millions of lesser and greater flamingos flock to the lake in search of food. The result is a beautiful sea of pink stretching as far as the eye can see. There are more flamingos at the lake when the water is more alkaline.

This is because more algae are present, providing food for the birds. During the long rains of April to June, the water would be less alkaline, and so there will be fewer birds. It is hard to tear oneself away from the pink beauty, but the flamingos will give cues when they start flying out. You will have seen much and taken amazing photos anyway so that you’ll move on to the other side of the game park in search of wild animals. Lake Nakuru National Park features not only a woodland savanna ecosystem but also a forest and swamp. The black and white rhinos in the attraction are heavily guarded to prevent the threat of poaching. If you are lucky, you’ll see the elusive leopard, likely perched on top of a tree.

We trust that in the course of the morning game viewing, you will encounter most of the 56 species of wild animals recorded here. After an exciting morning, you’ll drive out of the game park and start the road trip to the Maasai Mara for the second attraction of the Masai Mara national reserve. Lunch will be at Narok town, and you will arrive at the accommodation early in the evening for your dinner and overnight at the camp.

You can also decide to take a packed lunch for a full day game drives or come back at the camp for a hot lunch. Meanwhile, the secret on sighting a lot of animals is to do different game drives on different time and areas for the highest success rate. After this exciting day you will then come back to the camp where you can relax with a cold drink on your veranda with a view of the Mara River!

Day 12: Maasai Mara National Reserve – Early Morning Hot Air Balloon Ride In Maasai Mara.

Due to the thriving wildlife activity, a second full day in the park will offer you the opportunity to witness more of the wildlife’s natural behavior. This can include a lion killing, a cheetah chase, or the serene activities of elephants grazing and birds building nests. You will be back at the hotel in time for lunch with the afternoon free for you to enjoy at the lodge or exploring the park.

If there’s interest, there is the option to embark on a one-hour hot air balloon safari in Maasai Mara. At around 5 am, you will be picked up from your lodge and transferred to the launch site. Here you will meet your pilot, receive a briefing, and watch as your hot air balloon is inflated. At dawn, you will take off and enjoy a breathtaking view of the sun rising.

The balloon will carry you in the direction of the morning’s wind. Your pilot can precisely control the altitude of your balloon: sometimes flying at treetop height or much lower. This will offer you unique perspectives of the park and great photographic opportunities of the wildlife below.

Day 13: Visiting Maasai Village in the Morning and Transfer to Lake Naivasha National Park.

After breakfast, you will say your goodbyes to the Kenyan landscape before transferring to Lake Naivasha National Park. There’s also the chance to visit a Maasai village in the morning to discover the wonderful culture of the indigenous villagers. This visit includes personal interactions with “the Morans.” These are the young Maasai men trained as soldiers to protect the Maasai communities. The Morans once had to kill a lion as a rite of passage into manhood.

A traditional dance performed by men and women will welcome you to their village and a guide will lead you through the village as you discover how the Maasai live as well as learn about their beliefs and traditions. There are also demonstrations of how the Maasai make fire using just sticks and animal dung. You will get the unique opportunity to go into Maasai villagers’ houses and witness the full family setup. At the end of the guided tour, you will have a chance to buy some gift items and curios made in their village at the market. Then you will be transferred to Lake Naivasha National Park.

Being a freshwater lake, it also has a healthy fish population to include Black bass, Tilapia and Crayfish which attract a variety of fish-eating birds such as Long-tailed and Great Cormorants, along with Fish Eagles, Pelicans, and various types of Kingfishers. In the afternoon you will then do a boat safari on the lake to see the birds and hippos.

Lastly, tonight you will spend the night in the beautiful Naivasha Sopa lodge. Set in one hundred and fifty acres of grassland studded with Acacia bushes and trees, the resort is not only home to the resident giraffe, waterbuck and both Vervet and Colobus monkeys, but it is also a night stop for the hippos when they leave the lake every night to come and trim the grass on our expansive lawns.
