Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is a great wonder of biodiversity in southwestern Uganda along the Great Rift Valley. This is one of those few places in East Africa where lowland and mountain ecosystems combine to create a very dense, rich natural environment with extraordinary flora and fauna in incredible numbers. It shelters more than 120 species of mammals, 345 species of birds, 200 species of butterflies, and 160 types of trees, which make it a real natural treasure trove.

It is known for having the highest concentration of nearly half of the world’s remaining population of the endangered mountain gorillas, hence being an incomparable destination to encounter these animals at a close range. The park has a variety of endangered species of birds and very important catchment areas for conserving water or agricultural lands downstream.

Forest & Community Walk and Batwa Talks Experience

Before Bwindi became a protected area, it was originally inhabited by the Batwa people, among others like Mgahinga, Volcanoes National Park, and Virunga. Their attachment to the forest kept their culture alive for centuries, and their removal onto private lands occurred without support or compensation of any kind. You will be able to get acquainted with some of the ancient traditions and survival skills, and present-day efforts to adjust to modern life for the view of conserving their culture by community walks and engaging talks; This is going to be a whole new experience, fascinating in its cultural encounter but at the same time-one that provides a glimpse into the struggle of the Batwa people to garner recognition and quite literally, just survive.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip – Fly; Enjoy the aerial views of the changing landscapes of Uganda during this flight from Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip; On arrival at Kihihi, you will be met by an Arcadia Safaris representative and transferred to your lodge a distance of about an hour from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Depending on your arrival time, once you are all checked in and comfortable you might want to fill out the remainder of the afternoon with one of several optional activities to choose from. These are as follows:

Optional: Forest Walk

Nature Walk into the Enchanted Tropical Rainforest: A walk in nature into this alluring tropical rainforest, surrounded by wildlife guides along verdant trails, where one can gaze in awe at rich biodiversity, listen to the peculiar sounds of the rainforest, spot exotic bird species, and view the playfulness of monkeys swinging across the canopy.

Village Community Walk (Optional)

Take a cultural walk through the communities bordering Bwindi. You will be able to visit traditional homesteads, meet the local craftsmen, and see demonstrations in banana brewing. You can even pay a visit to a school, an orphanage, or consult with traditional healers who still apply ancient medicinal techniques.This walk can be adapted according to your interest and schedule.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Today will be the highlight of your safari! Wake up as early as 6 a.m. and go out for breakfast, after which you’ll embark on this once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking adventure. Remember to ask the hotel to package you some lunch in case it gets later than midday.

Your guide will drive you to the Bwindi National Park offices, ensuring timely arrival for the 7:30 a.m. Attend a briefing led by an experienced park ranger-guide. During the briefing, you will learn everything you need to know about the day’s trek, the various gorilla groups in the sector, the rich history of the forest, and the dos and don’ts of trekking. You will be assigned a gorilla family to track along with seven other travelers. You will also be allowed to hire porters to help you with carrying your luggage and a walking stick availed to you to help on the trails.

Once the group is ready, off you go on this trekking adventure! The trek to find the gorillas can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on the location of the family you will be tracking; You will finally see these great animals when you get to spend an hour with them-one magical hour to observe their interaction, behavior, and character. Take plenty of photos and videos, because these are moments; however, don’t forget to leave some minutes simply to feel the atmosphere.

Later on, your guide will bring you back to the lodge for some rest, a well-deserved meal, and letting loose after an exciting day in the heart of the forest.

Day 3: Transfer to Kampala – 3 Day Uganda fly to Bwindi Gorilla Safari.

Enjoy a quiet morning breakfast at your lodge; it is time to bid farewell to the dramatic Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Transfer to Kihihi Airstrip for your flight back to Entebbe. And at this height over Uganda’s lush landscapes, let your mind run through all that you have just experienced: gorilla trekking; Upon arrival in Entebbe, connect to your onward flight or drop-off at your hotel to mark the end of your 3-day Uganda fly-to-Bwindi Gorilla Safari.

Time allowing, you could explore Kampala with exciting activities like  visiting Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary ,Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, have a luxury sunset boat cruise on Lake Victoria or take a short trip to Jinja, the Adventure Centre of East Africa, offering grade 5 white water rafting, quad biking and bungee jumping!
