Itinerary Highlights:

Gorilla trekking, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, southwestern Uganda along the Great Rift Valley, is a wonder of biodiversity. This is one of those few places in East Africa where lowland and mountain ecosystems combine to create a very dense, rich natural environment with extraordinary flora and fauna in incredible numbers. It gives shelter to more than 120 species of mammals, 345 species of birds, 200 species of butterflies, and 160 types of trees, turning it into a real natural treasure cove.

It is known for having the highest concentration of nearly half of the world’s remaining population of the endangered mountain gorillas, hence being an incomparable destination to encounter these animals at a close range. The park has various endangered species of birds and very important catchment areas for conserving water or agricultural lands downstream.

Forest & Community Walk and Batwa Cultural Experience: Originally, before Bwindi became a protected area, it was inhabited by the Batwa People among others like Mgahinga, Volcanoes National Park, and Virunga. This attachment to the forest kept their culture alive for many centuries, and their removal onto private lands occurred without any kind of support or compensation. You will become familiar with some of the ancient traditions and survival skills, and present-day efforts to adjust to modern life for the view of conserving their culture with community walks and engaging talks. This is going to be a whole new experience, fascinating in its cultural encounter but at the same time one that provides insight into the struggle of the Batwa people to garner recognition and quite literally, just survive.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip – Fly; On this flight from Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip, take in the changing landscapes of Uganda as seen from up high; You will be met upon arrival by an Arcadia Safaris representative who will transfer you to your lodge – located a distance of about an hour from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Depending on your arrival time, after checking in and getting comfortable, you may want to fill out the remainder of the afternoon with one of several optional activities to choose from. These are as follows:

Forest Walk (Optional):Nature Walk into the Enchanted Tropical Rainforest: A nature walk into this alluring tropical rainforest, flanked by wildlife guides along verdant trails, where one can gaze in awe at rich biodiversity, listen to the peculiar sounds of the rainforest, spot exotic bird species, and view the playfulness of monkeys swinging across the canopy.

Village Community Walk (Optional): Take a cultural walk through the communities bordering Bwindi. You will visit traditional homesteads, meet the local craftsmen, and see demonstrations in banana brewing. You can even pay a visit to a school, an orphanage, or consult with traditional healers who still apply ancient medicinal techniques. Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Today is the highlight of your safari! Get up at 6 a.m. for breakfast, and get ready to begin this once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking experience. Remember to request that the hotel pack some lunch for you in case the trek extends past midday. Your guide will drive you to the Bwindi National Park offices, ensuring on-time arrival for the 7:30 a.m. briefing. Led by an experienced park ranger-guide, the briefing will cover everything you need to know about the trek, the gorilla groups in the sector, the forest’s rich history, and the essential dos and don’ts. You’ll be assigned a gorilla family to track, alongside seven other travelers. You can also hire porters to help carry your luggage, and a walking stick will be provided to assist you on the trails. Once ready, the adventure starts! The trek in search of the gorillas may take from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on the location of the family. When you eventually see the gorillas, you will have one magic hour of observing their behavior and interactions. Take as many pictures and videos as you want, but don’t forget to spend a few moments just savoring the magic of the moment. Later, your guide will escort you back to the lodge for well-deserved rest, a delicious meal, and time to unwind after an exhilarating day in the heart of the forest.
