The Kori Bustard: A Marvel of Ugandan Ornithology

Kori Bustard in Uganda (Ardeotis kori), Heaviest Flying Bird. Uganda, readily referred to as the “Pearl of Africa,” is a country endowed with diverse scenery and an endowment of fauna. Among the numerous fascinating species that make their homes in this East African nation, the Kori Bustard stands as one of the most majestic birds both locals and tourists alike marvel at.

Physical Characteristics:

The other interesting fact about the Kori Bustard is its size: it is the World’s heaviest flying bird. The weight of one male reached as high as 18 kg, and the wings could be more than 2.5 meters long. Their feathers are generally brown and gray, though blacks and whites provide a nice contrasting coloration to them. Its great and fancy black crown and facial markings give it that special royal look.

Habitat and Distribution:

The Kori Bustard is adaptable to a wide variety of environments in Uganda. Examples are grasslands, savannas, and open plains, all of which are good places to forage for insects, small vertebrates, and plant matter. Ugandan national parks, such as Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Kidepo Valley National Park, have very good habitats for the Kori Bustard.

Kori Bustard: Behavior and Diet:

Kori bustards are basically terrestrial birds that spend the greater part of the time foraging on the ground. They have an immense and various diet comprising insects, small mammals, reptiles, and seeds. They are patient stalkers in that they work their way through the grass slowly before pouncing onto some prey with a swift and powerful peck.

During the breeding season, the male performs an almost unbelievable display, puffing out his plumage, raising his crest, and making impressive aerial flights. Once a pair has been formed, both set up a nest, usually in the ground, and the female lays only one egg. Once incubation is complete, the male becomes extremely protective of the nest and continues to take care of the chick once it has hatched.

Conservation Status:

Although the Kori Bustard (Ardeotis kori) is not currently considered globally threatened, there are some local troubles to the population. Habitat loss and degradation from agricultural expansion, human settlements, and infrastructure threaten the existence of the species. The population further suffers decline due to hunting and predation.

The Ugandan government and some local people are already engaging in various initiatives aimed at studying and conserving the population of the Ardeotis kori. Its conservation majorly centers on habitat protection, education of local communities, and tourist practices not harming it but sustainable to its survival in the longer term.
