What is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking is a great safari-like adventure in the wilderness, which allows tourists to trek deep into the forest in search of mountain gorillas. This can be conducted in reserves that are set aside like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, or Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo; Guided by expert trackers, participants hike over rough terrain at times for hours until suddenly a family of gorillas, in view, reveals their natural behaviors and social interactions. It is one of those few, unforgettable journeys into the wild that gives an intimate acquaintance with these endangered primates.

You’re directly helping to conserve these gentle giants with each permit purchased. Where to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking takes place in Uganda in two wondrous National Parks:

1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage site and home to Uganda’s greatest population of habituated gorilla families. The dense rainforest in Bwindi provides a tough but satisfying trekking adventure, with mixed vegetation and animal species contributing to the experience. It has four sectors for trekking: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.

2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, Mgahinga offers a more secluded trekking experience with fewer crowds. You can track the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group here and enjoy the stunning view of the Virunga Volcanoes. Mgahinga also presents the unique opportunity to combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking and cultural interactions with the Batwa people.

Both parks guarantee a lifetime experience with gorillas, and therefore Uganda is a perfect place for this untamed wildlife experience.
