Led by the powerful Silverback Rwamutwe, supported by the formidable Silverback Tabu, who serves in place of second in command, it is a family of 13 people that possess 2 silverbacks, 2 blackbacks, 5 adult ladies, 1 sub-adult, and 2 infants. As opposed to other gorilla families that stay far off in the misty forest, the Nkuringo family stays close to the park limit, hence a wonderful choice for photographers. Trekkers have a difficult descent into the Kashasha Valley, where this visually stunning family awaits.

2. Posho Gorilla Family (14 Members)

The Posho Gorilla Family is undergoing the habituation process in Nkuringo led by Silverback Magara. The family consists of 14 members and will be ready soon for the Gorilla Habituation Experience. This is welcome news, as habituation experiences are typically only available in the Rushaga sector. Visitors who engage in this special trek will have the privilege of spending four hours observing the group acclimatize to human presence.

3. Christmas Gorilla Family (9 Members)

The Christmas Gorilla Family is named after its dominant silverback, Christmas, who was born on Christmas Day in the Nkuringo Group. The family consists of 9 members: 1 silverback, 2 adult females, 1 sub-adult female, 2 juveniles, and 2 infants. A new adult female and her juvenile son joined from the wild recently and are in the process of acclimatizing to human contact. Kiza, a group member, entered the group from the Nkuringo family after the passing away of Silverback Rafiki and just delivered a new baby. Annoyed by such changes, the group is serene and presents a great trekking experience.

4. Bushaho Gorilla Family (12 Members)

Bushaho Gorilla Family was formed by members who had split off from the Nkuringo group and afterward reunited under the leadership of Silverback Bahati. This unit consists of 12 members, which include 1 silverback, 1 blackback, 5 adult females, 1 sub-adult female, 2 juveniles, and 2 infants. Bahati shows off his body displays, and he normally showcases his strength in the presence of tourists. Dominant as he is, Bahati is normally calm and not hostile unless provoked. The Bushaho family is in the process of habituation, providing a thrilling experience to those who want to witness gorillas adapting to living with humans.

Best Time to Visit Nkuringo Sector

The best time to visit Nkuringo is during the dry seasons, June to August and December to February, when trekking is optimal. However, gorilla trekking is possible year-round, and the wet season, March to May and September to November, offers green landscapes and fewer visitors, though trails can be more challenging.
