African Grey Parrot in Uganda: Complete Guide to This Intelligent Forest Bird

The African Grey Parrot is one of the most intelligent and charismatic birds found in Uganda’s forests. Known scientifically as Psittacus erithacus, this striking grey bird with a bright scarlet tail is famous worldwide for its exceptional mimicry and cognitive abilities. In Uganda it still occurs in several key forest reserves, although populations have declined across much of its range due to the illegal pet trade and habitat loss. This complete guide covers the appearance, behaviour, distribution, best places to see it, conservation status, and practical tips for birdwatchers. Arcadia Safaris designs specialised birding itineraries that include the best remaining habitats for the African Grey Parrot in Uganda. Where to See Grey Parrot in Uganda

Physical Appearance and Identification

The African Grey Parrot is a medium-to-large parrot with predominantly dove-grey plumage, a short square-ended bright red tail, pale creamy-yellow eyes (in adults), and whitish bare facial skin. Both sexes look similar. Young birds have darker tails and greyish eyes. In flight the red tail is a distinctive field mark. The species is often first detected by its loud, varied calls and whistled notes, which carry through the forest canopy.

Habitat and Distribution in Uganda

In Uganda the African Grey Parrot is found mainly in moist forests between approximately 700 and 2,300 metres elevation. It prefers primary and secondary forest, forest edges, and areas with large fruiting trees.

Key locations where the species is still regularly recorded include:

Entebbe Botanical Gardens:  Located in Entebbe, this is an avian paradise where African Grey Parrots can be seen

Kibale Forest National Park: This is one of the most reliable sites; the surrounding Bigodi area is particularly associated with grey parrot conservation.

Budongo Forest Reserve: This forest holds the most important population and classic flyways.

Mabira Forest: This is a very accessible forest near Kampala  (Jinja) with historical and ongoing records. Other western and central forests such as Bugoma and parts of the Lake Victoria basin forests.

Although locally common in suitable protected forests, the species has become scarce or locally extinct in many parts of East Africa outside well-protected areas. Psittacus erithacus

Behaviour and Ecology

African Grey Parrots are highly social and usually live in pairs or small flocks. They specialize in feeding within the forest canopy, consuming primarily fruits, seeds, and nuts, along with occasional flowers and insects. They have remarkable intelligence — laboratory studies have demonstrated cognitive abilities comparable to those of a young child, including the capacity to understand concepts and mimic human speech with remarkable accuracy. In the wild, they communicate through a wide repertoire of calls and can mimic other bird species and environmental sounds.

Breeding generally coincides with the rainy seasons. They nest in tree cavities, and both parents participate in raising the young. Lifespan in the wild can reach several decades.

Conservation Status and Threats

The African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) has Endangered status on the IUCN Red List and appears in CITES Appendix I, which prohibits international commercial trade. Populations have declined dramatically across much of Africa because of:

  • Intense trapping for the pet trade (historically one of the most traded birds in the world)
  • Habitat loss and forest degradation

In Uganda, ongoing conservation work includes anti-trafficking efforts, rehabilitation and release of confiscated birds, community education, and the establishment of dedicated facilities such as the Grey Parrot Museum near Kibale National Park. Protected forests remain critical strongholds for the remaining wild populations.

The species can be seen year-round in suitable habitat. Early morning and late afternoon are the most productive times, when birds are actively moving between roosting and feeding sites.
